[FiRe] Mobile Phone Health Hazards

These are notes from the Future in Review conference. More here.

George Carlo, an international expert on the matter, spoke on mobile phone health hazards, realities and myths, if you will. I noted down what I found particularly relevant to my own issues in using a mobile phone.

Holding a mobile phone to your ear does most likely (almost definitely) have health effects on your brain. And by the way, the length of the phone call is probably not as decisive as the number of phone calls. The effect is much greater when initiating or receiving a call.

We should all use an earset when using mobile phones. Supposed evidence that the earset provides an antenna and might actually increase health risks is not holding up and has not been proven beyond very anecdotal evidence.

Handset manufacturers cannot react to any of those threats because of the litigation laws in the US. Because if they were to only slightly admit that there might be a problem, they would automatically open themselves to lawsuits. There is almost no advantage for a corporation to be open about potential risks.

Sidenote: People are usually much more concerned about base stations, although the base station is not the issue, but the handset is.
