[FiRe] Device-to-device Communications
These are notes from the Future in Review conference. More here.
George Moore from Microsoft had some interesting thoughts about the economics of device-to-device communications which I found quite convincing.
While chips becomes cheaper all the time, fibres and cables do actually not. Thus, it will soon come the point when it's cheaper to put a chip into a device than a cable. Thus, all devices will essentially become wireless just by economic reasoning. And then devices are very much location-agnostic. And an issue becomes how to build software that connects these with each other: Can I use this device with this plug at this location? Identity management? Security management? Replication? Synchronization? Large problems to be solved at the device-to-device level in the wireless mesh.
