[FiRe] Michael Dell

These are notes from the Future in Review conference. More here.

Michael Dell, fittingly introduced as one of the great CEOs of all time, had a fascinating conversation with Mark Anderson on stage. I was so hooked that I didn't take detailed notes, but just the following tidbits.

Dell overpowering competitors: Last quarter: Market growth +2%. Without Dell, market growth -1%. Dell growth in shipments +29%.

Notebooks: Although notebooks grow much faster in Western countries, they are lesser part of emerging markets. Thus, total Dell notebook growth gets overwhelmed by demographics, in a way. Really small notebooks are a niche market ("executive jewellry"). Regular notebooks are increasingly desktop replacements. Consumers, because it's their one computer, they buy the most-equipped notebook available. Thus, notebooks do not get as light as they could, because consumers prefer more functionality over less size.
