[FiRe] William Swope, Intel: Three problems not solved even in 2008
These are notes from the Future in Review conference. More here.
William Swope, a VP at Intel, mentioned three (well, five, but I only wrote down three) problems that he thinks will still not be solved or have even worsened five years from now.
The whole issue of software intellectual property will have worsened. The issues of open vs. controlled vs. regulated vs. proprietary will not have been solved. And all this will lead to the sad situation that, the liability of releasing software will have increased, whereas returns have not increased.
Moore's Law is forgotten by software guys. Cost of producing software has not been brought down, although the cost of producing hardware is constantly decreasing. Automated, sophisticated software design tools are not available. Software paradigm keeps lagging. -> Software code base should be growing as hardware standards do.
Note: Ray Ozzie disagreed with this notion (which was also brought up by Sun founder Andy Bechtolsheim) later on in the conference.
The integration of business and private lives will not be supported as well as it should be by applications and products.
