Improved Math Teaching

Mathematics is indeed becoming more important in a world of computers, networks, and engineering in general. In a 1985 article, Paul Lutus argues that a new understanding of how mathematics should be taught in school using the advantages that computers bring to the table would greatly benefit mankind. Focus on the systems and understandings, let the computer do the simple calculating. He makes an interesting analogy to the world of literacy, which is a basic skill today, but wasn't until Gutenberg invented the printed book.

Reminds me of school discussions with our math teacher whether using a calculator would actually harm our understanding of mathematics. Quite the contrary, it will help us do more things in less time, thus allowing us to dive deeper. If I had the choice today, I wouldn't study business, but math. All the knowledge and even more so the methods and ways of working I could have acquired studying math would have benefitted me in other areas as well. Rigor never goes out of fashion.
